Halloween and Pumpkins

This is my first post on our blog. I wanted to answer my friends comment. We will be adding a picture of the church but we need a battery for the camera first. So John has a satellite picture of the church. In the picture, the round building is the Church and the blue topped buildings are two school buildings and the priest's house. I think you can click on the picture to see a bigger version.

She asked if they celebrate Halloween here, I am not totally sure. I think they celebrate an all saints day but as for the trick or treat Halloween that they do in the U.S. I don't think so. I know that one school is having a Halloween dance. And John has seen Halloween decorations while out riding his bike.

Yes you can grow pumpkins here in Belize. But the pumpkin that they grow here are small and green and used alot in cooking. John thinks the orange pumpkins would grow here, however we have not seen any yet.

As for cooking, yes they do have pizza. They have restaurants that make pizza, but it seems a little to expensive. They have all the ingredients to make homemade pizza, although the cheese is expensive here also. So we haven't bought a pizza or made a pizza yet. We have had a couple slices of pizza free when we first arrived here in Belize, from some nice people that were staying at the same hotel we were staying when we first arrived in Belize.

Yes I have learned a few new recipes from some wonderful Belize ladies. I have made a banana bread (more like a cake). My landlady gave me the recipe. And my friend taught me how to make other foods like fry breads, tortillas, plantain and beans and rice.

Having grown up in Cincinnati as I have, I feel for you. No Larosa's, no Skyline, no United Dairy Farmers malts, and no White Castles! I miss those things as well as The Knotty Pine bar, and malls bigger than a city block.
Wal-Mart seems to be the center of the universe here, and I doubt that I go a day without hearing those words, whether I'm working that day or not. Speaking of work, what do you do for money there? What IS the money there (pesos)?
Call me nosey, but just WHY did you move there? I envy you in a lot of ways, but as crappy as it is here in the USA, we have some redeeming qualities. Will you become citizens there? If it's none of my business, I'm cool with that.
Tell me about the lizzards there, as I adore those little guys. What other wildlife have you seen? How close to the ocean are you all? Is it paradise there?
Are the boys adjusting well?
I'm glad that you have this page, I've had NO luck identifying the nursing mother statue from my end, it is interesting tho.
Keep in touch o.k.. and enjoy all of the gifts that The Lord has given you.
Love,
Dave

Okay... if my brother can respond, so can I. We miss you Becky. I really hope you guys are happy. Christopher, I'm still wAiting to hear from you.
Becky, What can I say, I am scared for you and happy in the same way. Christopher, I don't think I told Dave my brother my plans for you and Johnny. (you know, to be our tour guides.) Have you been checking that out? Christoper and Johnny, You guys would really like my big brother Dave. Becky, do you have home recipes. I can send you some. I sent Dave a small version of Betty Homes and Gardens book. I still use my electric skillet you gave me as a wedding present. It's rain all day. It's getting colder. Tomorrows another day. Rain is predicted.

Dave, I will try to answer your questions.
Well they may not have a LaRosa's or a Skyline, nor do they have United Dairy Farmers malts. And I doubt they have a White Castles. I have not heard of the Knotty Pine,
Belize does have pizza here. And there are more stores and restaurants in Belize City and in tourist spots. We just happened to pick a not so touristy spot. And as far as Malls. Mexico is about 8 miles away from here and I believe they have Malls and I believe they have a Walmart. I am not sure if it is the same as the ones in Ohio and Kentucky, but it is a Walmart. I really didn't like White Castles, but I do miss UDF malts.
I really didn't do malls all that much.
They have Belize dollars and it is 2 Belize dollars to 1 U.S. dollar. They have Queen Elisabeth on their money. The bills are a bit more colorful.
As for why we moved, that is a hard one to put into words. We moved for lots of reasons.
But in our hearts it was the right thing to do. I also never said that it is crappy in the U.S.A..
This is just something we wanted to do and alot of times people say I want to do this or that and never get around to it.
No we will not be citizens, we would like permanent residency here though.
Now for the lizards, I know there are a lot of lizards here. You would like them if you like lizards. I will see if Chris will write about them in more detail. We will try to get a picture of a lizard.
We are very close to the ocean. I think 2 streets over from our house and there is the ocean. It is nice. I don't think it is paradise but it beats the icy weather you have in the winter months. I was never fond of winter.
Yes the boys are adjusting very well.
Yes I do enjoy all the gifts the Lord does give me. Thank you. That is sweet.

Laurie, I am happy you responded. I hope I did ok with the post.
Well we miss all of you too. Yes we are happy.
You don't have to be scared for me, we are all doing just fine. We have good friends that come and visit and look in on us.
Yes I did bring one cook book but if you have time to email me any recipes that are your favorites. Any recipes would be welcome. It is rather warm here. We didn't have rain today.
We could have a little tomorrow though.
